A fine-grained quartz-feldspar and calcareous sandy beach located in Falconara Marittima in the Marche region. The beach is 150 meters long and 55 meters wide with an average slope of 3%, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The water depth ranges from 80 metres at average to high tide levels. The surrounding area is characterized by urban settlements and railway infrastructure.

Location

Falconara Marittima, Ancona Province, Marche Region. The competent authority is located at Piazza Carducci 4, Falconara Marittima.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. The bathing water is served by the Vallechiara wastewater treatment plant, a biological plant with anaerobic digestion serving approximately 70,000 inhabitants and 3,500 population equivalents from industrial activities. Monitoring conducted by ARPAM in 2010 showed monthly results compliant with authorized limits. E. coli measurements in 2010 ranged from below detection limits to 3,000 CFU/100 ml in September. Overflow discharges occur during exceptional rainfall events along the beach through a concrete pipeline.

Risks

Overflow discharge from the combined sewer system during heavy rainfall events. Algal bloom of the non-toxic species Fibrocapsa japonica occurred in August 2009, causing brownish-reddish coloration and oily consistency of the water.
