Vedersø Klit

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Vedersø Klit is a 400-meter-long beach located west of a summer house area, facing the North Sea in a characteristic coastal environment with high dunes and sand stretching as far as the eye can see. The beach consists of fine sand with scattered small and medium-sized stones, while the seabed offshore features fine sand with occasional patches of small stones. The beach is between 100 and 120 meters wide.

Water

Saltwater in the North Sea. The beach is 400 meters long and 100–120 meters wide. Water depth increases rapidly offshore and is highly variable due to tides and changes in currents and weather conditions.

Location

The beach is located in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, Denmark, and can be reached via Havvej road, which leads to a large parking area with attached toilet facilities.

Facilities

Parking area, toilet facilities with drinking water, rescue buoy, waste bins, warning signs about deteriorated water quality, blue flag, first aid kit, emergency telephone.

Season

1 June to 1 September. Water quality is monitored routinely during the bathing water season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine water samples analysed for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) taken regularly over the preceding 4-year period. No known sources of faecal contamination affecting beach water quality have been identified.

Risks

Risk of rip currents (revlehuller), which are common but dangerous phenomena where water pressed over sandbars returns in narrow channels. Water depth increases abruptly and is variable. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms and phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large seaweed accumulation in the water. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution (including oil spills) may occur. Sudden contamination from accidents involving leisure boats, manure tanks, and sewer lines is possible.
